You Can’t Go Home Again

Bob has a very good post on the the current state of the world.  He mentions how even a top show like ER gets massively lower ratings than a top show like ‘All In The Family’ from back in the day and it’s essentially the result of the plethora of choices.  He then cautions the budding songwriter/artist to be realistic, diversify revenue streams (sell t-shirts) and not fixate on super-stardom since it’s no longer possible.

I agree with everything he writes.  It’s not so bad though.  It seems to me that now, more than ever, making music is going to be about the making of the music for its own sake.  If you work hard enough and bust your butt, something good will happen and maybe you’ll be able to pay rent and live a middle-class existence doing what you love.  That seems like a fine possibility to me.

Music as a good isn’t worth very much but it brings joy to people’s lives and it’s fun to create and if we can get it out there and into people’s ears maybe that’s all you need.

Here’s a quote:

The handwriting is on the wall.  Don’t be dazzled by what’s on TMZ, most of those people don’t make any money.  Don’t look for an advance.  Just look to make music so good that when someone hears it, they need to tell others about it.
