The Flying Change

“Pop-Riddled Indie Rock”

I updated the Press page with a more complete listing of the highlights.  There have been some very nice reviews that have come in over the past few weeks that I haven’t publicized as actively.  I’d specifically point people to the review in Fensepost as well as the review in Delusions of Adequacy.  Here’s the quote from Fensepost:

Somewhere between Sam Jacobs’ saddened personal affairs, and his personal and professional relationships with extraordinary talents, he created a mind-scape of fine-tuned and pop-riddled indie rock.

Brian Sanchez at DOA was even more gushing.  It’s always nice when people can let their guards down and absord something new in an honest way.  This was what he had to say about “The Northern Bay”:

“The Northern Bay” is quite honestly, one of the most absorbing, moving songs of the year. A piano-based, slow-moving, atmospheric dedication to his wife, Jacobs sings about how their life has been drastically altered because of her constant struggle. And as the song progresses, his voice merely shivers as he aches and hurts to get every word out.

That song doesn’t catch everyone first listen but Brian got the point.

Now, because I don’t take myself too seriously, or at the least, because I want you to think I don’t, I also am posting the worst review of the record that I’d seen, in Slug Magazine.  It was so bad and so vicious it called to mind the “Shit Sandwich” review from Spinal Tap.

This woman, Alexandra Harris, clearly was not feeling the music.  As is often the case, writers seem more inspired when they’re writing a bad review then when they’re writing a good review.  And if there’s a negative meme on the record at all, it’s that it doesn’t grab people on their first listen and isn’t paced enough.  Of course, I disagree.  But I do think the album is a grower and not something that jumps out at you and smacks you in the face.  Unless there’s a quiet moment in your apartment and you hear the outro from “Hold My Heartache”.  That might be a point that jumps at you.

Anyway, Alexandra was clearly upset and her summary of the record was that I equal “The Beatles + Elliott Smith + shit”.  Of course, I appreciate the first two parts of that equation.

Here’s the most crushing quote:

The Flying Change seem like a couple brokenhearted cowboys with too much time on their hands. Maybe if the records don’t sell, they can make a deal with doctors and be used as a sleeping aid.

Ouch.  Although the brokenhearted cowboy line is kind of cool.  Nice little image.  Coincides with the ‘landscape pop’ genre in some way.

What’s wrong with shit? Perhaps she meant it in a good way, as in…”man, that’s some good shit…” Personally, i could use some sleeping aids…
