The Flying Change

Interview: Alex Lauterstein

Burning a Hose The Liquid Oxygen Remix

We did an interview with John P Hastings when we put out the Processor remix.  Now, belatedly, I’m posting the interview with Alex Lauterstein who did the Burning a Horse remix and who is doing a remix of The Ways That We Destroy Ourselves.  Put this remix on late at night when it’s time to go to bed and you want one last tune.

Interview: Alex Lauterstein

1. Describe your background and how you came to be working in music?

I came from Uruguay,  South America in 1992.  I always had a passion for music. As an Architecture student for 5 years , I knew I had a passion for all things creative and arts.  I became a DJ by accident.  I was playing one of my mix-tapes for a group of friends that were underground clubgoers and instantly one of my friends offered up the the possiblity to headline a delicious underground afterhours party in Manhattan.

From there it quickly turned into a career that has allowed me to travel the globe playing my music in the best clubs.  I start to produce soon after and did some great intersting work with amazing people, like composer Haley Moss.  It was with Moss that started our first studio band 3 WingButterfly and recorded my first ep, Metamorphosis. That was my first experimentation with ambient music.

I later recorded three mixed albums for Centaur Records and, with the last I began to explore greener pastures with an electronic lounge cd, something I have never done before at that time as far as a mix compilation goes.

2. Who are your primary influences?

80’s New Wave/ new romantic/ rock/modern electronic bands like ORB, AIR, UNDERWORLD, ZERO 7, to name a few.

3. What ideas were you working with on this remix?  What story or stories or images were you evoking or conjuring?

Listening to such a beautiful song as it was presented to me instantly made me try to preserve the spirit of it. Turn it upside down without tearing the soul of the original song.  With my love of electrolounge instantly I was drawn to do something lush and pretty. An oil painting that constantly changes to a simphony of colors.

4. What artists or albums have you been listening to recently?

Anything from Dandy Warhols to Lady Gaga to Velvet Underground…and of course The Flying Change.

5. What’s next and upcoming for Alex Lauterstein?

Production and more production.  A new studio band called AudioPhile and an ep, which we just finish recording.  The the first cut is a tune called Unbroken.  And my studio album, Smoking Signals, to be out early next year  The first cut , Dreaming Romantics is almost ready!  And a new Flying Change remix !!  Check out my website for more information.
