The biggest blog besides AudioMuffin is probably Largehearted Boy. We also got some coverage on a covers blog called Cover Me. We also got some nice coverage on The Music Slut and Surviving the Golden Age.

And I think there might be more forthcoming. Thanks to everyone for getting the word out.

We recorded a cover of ‘Someone Great’ from our show at Rockwood a few months ago. Frank over at Audio Muffin, who had a nice review of PIARS when it came out. When I mentioned that we’d be covering the tune, Frank asked for a copy. So I gave Audio Muffin an exclusive for a week on the cover.

Here’s what he had to say about it:

Someone Great brings The Flying Change to an orchestral 13-piece band. Each member of the band adds their own rhythm and titillating flourish. If anyone has video of this please leave a link in the comments – it sounds epic!

Thanks for the kind words, Frank! Check out our cover of ‘Someone Great’ on Audio Muffin when you have a chance.

In case you’re keeping score, Pain Is A Reliable Signal has shown up on three Best of Lists so far. Ron Tremblath, who writes for FensePost, called it the #8 best record of the year.

Somewhere between Sam Jacobs’ saddened personal affairs, and his personal and professional relationships with extraordinary talents, he created a mind-scape of fine-tuned and pop-riddled indie rock.

The gang at Striker Bill have listed PIARS as #18.

This is a stark, meticulously elegant and achingly beautiful set of songs that possess an emotional ardor unlike most music that you’ve heard before.

And Ste Birkett at Heavier Than Air listed it at #14.

Exquisitely orchestrated from the delicate, minimalist passages of Broken Bow to the light-hearted bounce of If You See Something, every song here is a winner.

Not bad for a band, a songwriter and a record that were completely unknown seven months ago. Bring it on 2010.

We did an interview with John P Hastings when we put out the Processor remix. Now, belatedly, I’m posting the interview with Alex Lauterstein who did the Burning a Horse remix and who is doing a remix of The Ways That We Destroy Ourselves. Put this remix on late at night when it’s time to go to bed and you want one last tune.

Interview: Alex Lauterstein

1. Describe your background and how you came to be working in music?

I came from Uruguay, South America in 1992. I always had a passion for music. As an Architecture student for 5 years , I knew I had a passion for all things creative and arts. I became a DJ by accident. I was playing one of my mix-tapes for a group of friends that were underground clubgoers and instantly one of my friends offered up the the possiblity to headline a delicious underground afterhours party in Manhattan.

From there it quickly turned into a career that has allowed me to travel the globe playing my music in the best clubs. I start to produce soon after and did some great intersting work with amazing people, like composer Haley Moss. It was with Moss that started our first studio band 3 WingButterfly and recorded my first ep, Metamorphosis. That was my first experimentation with ambient music.

I later recorded three mixed albums for Centaur Records and, with the last I began to explore greener pastures with an electronic lounge cd, something I have never done before at that time as far as a mix compilation goes.

2. Who are your primary influences?

80’s New Wave/ new romantic/ rock/modern electronic bands like ORB, AIR, UNDERWORLD, ZERO 7, to name a few.

3. What ideas were you working with on this remix? What story or stories or images were you evoking or conjuring?

Listening to such a beautiful song as it was presented to me instantly made me try to preserve the spirit of it. Turn it upside down without tearing the soul of the original song. With my love of electrolounge instantly I was drawn to do something lush and pretty. An oil painting that constantly changes to a simphony of colors.

4. What artists or albums have you been listening to recently?

Anything from Dandy Warhols to Lady Gaga to Velvet Underground…and of course The Flying Change.

5. What’s next and upcoming for Alex Lauterstein?

Production and more production. A new studio band called AudioPhile and an ep, which we just finish recording. The the first cut is a tune called Unbroken. And my studio album, Smoking Signals, to be out early next year The first cut , Dreaming Romantics is almost ready! And a new Flying Change remix !! Check out my website for more information.

John Donohue gave us a very nice write-up in this week’s New Yorker for the show this Thursday at Rockwood. It’s also our first extended mention in The New Yorker. My favorite magazine on the planet.

.. her perserverance became the inspiration for Jacob’s lush new album, “Pain Is A Reliable Signal.” On songs like “The Mayo Clinic” and “Dirty White Coats”, Jacobs transforms the ordeal into three-minute philosophical meditations formed around simple chord changes, laid-back tempos, and his sensitive baritone vocals. A first-rate band that includes Katie Scheele, on oboe and English horn, Dan Levine, on trombone and euphonium, and Stan Harrison, on saxophones and flute, provides harmonically lush accompaniment.

Blessed and endorsed by the world’s best magazine. Thursday, December 3rd. Rockwood Music Hall. 184 Allan Street. 9pm sharp.
